Cartoon One Two Six Nine
Menu
A restaurant. A sign on the wall reads SHERLOCK HOLMES’ WILD GAME CANNIBAL RESTAURANT. Sherlock Holmes, acting as waiter, is telling a couple of diners about the specials. He says: “The soup is eyeballs, the side is an ear, and the game is a foot.”
I had to work pretty hard to get to this joke, and it’s probably not worth it, and it kind of doesn’t make sense, but you know… tomorrow is another day.
Talk about full service. Yesterday, David Mandel submitted a joke for one two six eight, and today he draws it:
At The Cell Phone Factory…
This is funny — straightforward, to the point, and it doesn’t get in the way of Dave’s joke, which is, of course, the most important thing. I did have to add a title to it, to place it at a cell phone factory. That might have been unnecessary; the signs on the door might be enough to sell that we’re at an evil factory of some sort. I’m not sure. At any rate, I love the cartoon. Thank you, David.
Now, is it fancy? Goodness, no. Dave is plainly someone like me — someone who appreciates fine cartooning but has no natural ability to do it himself (no offense, Dave). Which makes me value this attempt by him all the more.
That said, this substack has regular contributors whose earliest efforts were basically as primitive as this cartoon, and who have now graduated to far more sophisticated work. So Mr Mandel, I implore you to keep drawing. You could be the next Edd Turner or Drink Savant.
The rest of you, too. Draw.
