Cartoon One Two Nine Six
Chore
A man, mowing his lawn, glances over his shoulder to see an enormous rolling lawnmower blade bearing down on him (as if a giant were mowing his lawn).
Some jokes rely more on the artist than others. Like, there isn’t really a “joke” here, just an idea, a visual, but a talented artist could make it look plausible and funny. Jack Ziegler would’ve made a funny cartoon out of this.
Patricia Highsmith was maybe the greatest crime novelist of the 20th century. But before she wrote “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” she was a young Barnard graduate who took whatever work she could get. And that meant writing comic books:
She soon left comics, to write crime books, serious lit, and pseudonymous lesbian pulp erotica. She was, apparently, embarrassed by her comic work, because she tried to destroy all evidence of it once she became an established writer. But it’s all pretty innocuous stuff — mostly boring bio comics, like this one about boxer/ war hero Barney Ross.
Come back next week. Aye Ull Try. Read my books. This week: “Revenge of the Giving Tree.” Funny poems for kids.
Draw.

Quite the comic and quite the boxer.
