Two friends talking. One says: “I’m not poor, I’m between fortunes.”
This is a very American attitude. It’s a riff on the misquote of John Steinbeck: “Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.” Steinbeck didn’t exactly say that, but he said something close, and the misquote is better. “Temporarily embarrassed millionaires” is just great.
Johnny Nebisco only appeared in one comic book, which is too bad, because I like his name:
He’s a wisecracking detective who’s the bane of his boss’s existence, but his boss loves him anyway because Nebisco’s so damn good at his job. This is a reliably entertaining relationship (see also Archie Goodwin/ Nero Wolfe and Danny Ocean/ Akim Tamiroff). Unfortunately, as I mentioned, this is Nebisco’s only appearance.
